Good general information--this will give you info to contact your City Council and it's members to comment or obtain additional information.

The City Council is the City's legislative body, with the power to enact and enforce all ordinances and resolutions. Nine Council Members are elected from districts and five are elected at-large, by all voters of the City.

The fourteen members of Council, along with the Mayor, act only by ordinance, resolution or motion. They adopt and may alter the annual budget and confirm the Mayor's appointments. Council is responsible for the appropriation and issuance of bonds, the awarding of contracts and the approval of City expenditures over $50,000. Council may lease or dispose of the City's real estate and may levy assessments against property. Council determines its own rules of procedure, and its meetings are open to the public.

Fourteen Council Members are elected every two years, in odd-numbered years. Council Members are limited to serving three terms of two years each, with each term beginning on January 2 of the even-numbered year. Five Council Members are elected At-Large, or city-wide, while the other nine are elected to geographic districts of roughly the same proportion of population. According to the City Charter, once the population of the City of Houston exceeds 2.1 million, expected for the 2010 census, two more geographic council districts will be added.

Rockets Tux & Tennies Gala Just Days Away
Annual Charity Event Benefits SNAP and Boys & Girls Clubs This Year

http://www.snapus.org/site/R?i=wPl255y6TiXW78ZPglAXDQ..

The Houston Rockets Tux & Tennies Charity Gala is just a week and a half away, so if you are planning to attend, you should buy your tickets today. This year the annual event benefits both SNAP and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston. The event is attended by Rockets players and management and typically by other nationally known figures, including celebrities, political figures, and other athletes. The name of the event refers to the dress code, which requires a decidedly cool-chic blend of class and athleticism, involving black tie/cocktail attire paired with tennis shoes. Don’t be surprised if some of the tennis shoes you see at the event are not strictly off-the-shelf models. Full story.

Day of Awareness Has Passed, but Photo Contest Continues

http://www.snapus.org/site/R?i=cf9hw4dHuGJFZK4qGfgG2g..

SNAP clinics spayed or neutered 238 dogs and cats for free (or nearly so) in several separate events commemorating Spay Day 2011. Each clinic put its own twist on the day to help serve different parts of the community. The SNAP Spay-Neuter and Animal Wellness Clinic in San Antonio opened up the doors to dogs too and sterilized 84 animals, including 33 dogs and 51 cats. The Houston Spay-Neuter and Animal Wellness Clinic offered services for cats only but accepted males as well as females. They sterilized a total of 97 cats, including 93 males and three females. The Houston mobile clinic focused on male cats only, neutering a total of 57 for just five cents apiece. Full story.

Prodigious Profits Produced by Painterly Pups
Picassos by Paws Fundraiser Raises Over $2,000 for SNAP

http://www.snapus.org/site/R?i=HiZwY0eOGUMiMk9kYXjrDw..

Painting pooches (and their human friends) raised over $2,000 for spay-neuter at the latest Picassos by Paws fundraiser held on Sunday, February 20, 2011. Dozens of masterpieces of modern canine art were created by a variety of talented dogs and put on displayed (to dry) in the front window of Archway Gallery at 2305 Dunlavy St. in Houston. Some of the artists were full of excitement at the prospect of putting paw to paper while others seemed a bit more fretful. Everyone had a good time in the end though, and each artist went home with her or his own work of art suitable for framing. Full story.

Hello Darlings,

Dogs love to eat, but sometimes we eat things that give humans pause -- if not nausea. You might think our keen sense of smell would deter us, but it has more to do with our sense of taste than our sense of smell, and that is not nearly as keen as one might expect. Read this month's letter to learn more.

IMPROVE YOUR CREDIT SCORE-Linda J. Marshall--Innerloop Specialist-713-523-4600

REBLOGGED AND USED BY PRIOR PERMISSION FROM REALTY TIMES

REALTY TIMES 8/11/2010

Improve Your Credit Score by Carla Hill

Healthy credit scores have never been more important. As banks tighten their lending standards, it's important to have your score as high as possible.

A FICO score is a number, in general from 300 to 850, that is formulated from your payment history, including such things as amounts of money owed, length of your credit history, new credit accounts open, and how you have used your credit. Age, salary, race, education, and religion do not affect your score. You can't buy a good score; you can only build one over time by demonstrating that you are a responsible borrower.

To improve your credit score, start with these steps.

1. Pay your bills on time. This seems like a simple enough feat, but in hard economic times, more and more borrowers are finding themselves hard-pressed with the decision of what bill to pay. If you find yourself having a hard time paying bills, be sure to talk with the lender or company you owe. They may have programs or suggestions that will help you avoid having your bill sent to collections.

2. Don't let items go to collections. Once an item is sent to collections, your credit report will suffer. This ding will stay on your report for seven years.

3. Don't open other new credit lines when applying for a home loan. You may want the new car or living room set, but the home buying process is not the time to open multiple new accounts. This is a sure-fire way to temporarily reduce your credit score. If you do this before finalizing your mortgage, you many find yourself stuck with a higher interest rate.

4. Monitor your report on a regular basis for errors and cases of identity theft. Errors do happen. To get them corrected quickly, be sure to contact both the organization that provided the erroneous information, as well as the credit bureau. Identity theft happens. And it is your responsibility to identify it and address it!

5. Pay down credit cards. Carrying high balances on credit cards can severely affect your credit score. Think of it this way. If you have a grand total of $10,000 worth of credit limits available, but you owe $5,000 on all of your cards put together, you are using half of your available credit!

The best loans and mortgages are available to borrowers with FICO scores 700 and above. Experian, one of the major credit reporting agencies, reports that the average credit score is 693.

For a look at your credit report, visit the government sponsored site, myannualcreditreport.com. You may access your report three times a year free of charge.
